If you’re staying in or near Potts Point, one of Sydney’s best free outings is a short trip to the Royal Botanic Garden. Here’s how to plan it, and why a proper breakfast beforehand makes the walk better.

What is the Royal Botanic Garden?

The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney was established in 1816 by Governor Macquarie. It is described as the oldest scientific institution in Australia. The garden covers about 30 hectares beside the harbour at Farm Cove, and entry is free.

What to see

  • The Fernery and the Rainforest Walk for shade on a hot day.
  • The Palace Rose Garden and the Herb Garden.
  • The Spring Walk, planted in 1856.
  • The Macquarie Culvert, built by convicts.
  • Rathborne Lodge, a sandstone building from 1856.
  • The National Herbarium, with plant specimens dating back to 1770.
  • Harbour views along the garden’s edge, including toward Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.

Features and programs can change, so check the garden’s official website for current tours, events and opening times before you go.

How to plan the morning

  1. Eat first. Start at Olivia By Fave on Orwell Street, Potts Point. Breakfast runs from 7:00am to 11:30am.
  2. Walk toward the city and the garden. Check a map for the route that suits you.
  3. Take your time on the harbour edge. Late afternoon light on the water is popular with photographers, but mornings are quieter.
  4. Come back for coffee. Olivia By Fave serves specialty coffee and premium matcha all day.
